Whey Protein, do you need it?

Whey Protein, do you need it?

We have all had that conversation with someone or another about Protein. We’ve all been caught up in the hype that protein is a must for each and every one of us, But do we really need it?

In todays video I will not only answer that question but also answer; if you do what should you buy? What is all the hype about?  And how do i make protein taste awesome!

Do you need it? The simple answer is no, but should you be taking it? Yes, but there’s reasons why you should.

  1. You can’t eat enough protein based foods like meat to hit your macro nutrients.
  2. If you are time poor and can’t get in the kitchen to cook enough meat.
  3. You’re on a budget and good quality meat is out of your budget.

What should you buy? With so many brands out there, we can understand that you might be confused as to what to buy, every time we walk in to a supplement store or health food store we can get blinded by the amount of brands, colours, sizes and types of protein there are. So lets keep it simple, stay away from any brands that have too much of the following;

  • Carbohydrates
  • Maltodextrin
  • Sugar
  • Aspartame Sweetener

WPI vs WPC? Whey protein isolate, or whey protein concentrate? They are very similar, the small differences come down to absorption rate. WPC will keep you fuller for longer, perfect for that mid-afternoon snack when you need something quick and easy.

Cost?

Again let’s keep it simple, anything under $2 per serve is good value for money. You do need to make sure that the serving size is between 25 and 30 grams of protein, this is the minimal effective dose, but it is also close to the maximal effective dose, don’t think that a larger serving of protein gets more of a benefit.

Don’t fall for the hype!

Being in the industry as long as i have, you hear it all, false claims by companies just to sell your product and i’m sure you have heard them too, ‘Add 7 kilos of lean muscle mass’, or ‘A Women’s only protein’, again you want to keep it simple, just follow what we have gone over before to make sure that you are getting the right protein.

How can i make it better?

Protein isn’t always the best tasting thing in the world by itself, so what can you add to it to please your taste buds. Let’s start with some spices, half a tea spoon of either cinnamon or ginger. Ginger as a warming agent in these cooler months and cinnamon, which is great for regulating your blood sugar levels. For something next level be creative and use protein as a base for a smoothie, adding wonderful whole foods like berries, shredded coconut, almond milk and you can also add your greens in there too.

In summary, you need protein if you can’t get it from whole foods. Keep it simple and get a good value brand that has low list of ingredients on the packaging, don’t believe the hype that you hear and be creative, add some fruit or greens in your smoothie, take a photo of it tag us on instagram @RBTgyms and we will share your wonderful creations!
